If you read this site regularly you will know that compost is one of my favourite subjects. Next week is compost awareness week running from the 4th to the 10th of May. There are events going on all over the country and it is being supported by celebrity gardener Charlie Dimmock. In my opinion you can never have too much compost so if you ...

I planted my onions over the weekend. It was a strange day as in the morning it snowed and then the sun came out. It was a really nice day once the sun had come out and I spent about 3 happy hours pottering about in the garden dodging rain showers admittedly but enjoying the sun when it came out.

Busy with baby
Been a busy few weeks. My wife has gone back to work after her maternity leave and my daughter has started nursery. This adds lots to our daily routine but I think we are actually settling into one now. I have also been ill with a cold(manflu according to the wife!). Anyway I was watching Gardeners World a few weeks ago and Monty Don explained the ins and out's of ...

I haven't added anything to this blog for a while and I noticed that Chas Griffin added a comment to my post about Scenes from a Smallholding. I was slightly confused at the 'no relation to Ali' part as my wife is called Ali but it's cool having a celebrity comment. It also good to ...

Just got my two Big Drippas from Gone Gardening. They are on sale so I got the two and have just finished setting them up in the greenhouse so they can provide water to my tomatoes. I think they should provide water slightly more efficiently than me and the watering can, particularly with the hot weather and drought talk!

Bumblebees
There was an article in The Independant about bumblebees and the problems they are having. Apparently 3 UK species have become extinct and 5 and getting there. You can't actually read the whole article without paying so I will kind of summarise here from what I can remember and what I have found out. You can support the Bumblebee Conservation Trust by joining it here. If you join you ...

My lovely wife to be gave this book to me for Christmas. It’s very funny – the writing style is a bit like Bill Bryson. It does make you want to do what Chas and his family did but at the moment I am going to stick with my back garden – try and actually grow something in it this year!

Bought this book over the weekend. It’s pretty interesting. Apparently the average woman ingests 1kg of lipstick over the course of her life. This book covers virtually everything to do with leading a ‘good life’ – apart from perhaps religion – I don’t think it misses much there though! It does’nt say anything is righ or wrong just tries to give you ...

Sussex, the woodmans cottage
Sussex, the woodmans cottage – I watched this on TV a couple of weeks ago – I think it was Grand Designs: Revisited. On a bit eairler was this – How to Rescue a House. I found myself thinking that my ideal house would be somewhere between the two. A nice Victorian refurbishment – but with a green attitude. It seems very difficult and expensive to do though. ...

Old Shaw Farm: For the love of kale!
Old Shaw Farm: For the love of kale! – We get Kale in a veg box occasionally. We’ve tried a couple of recipes that use it but it’s never seemed quite right. I think this one might be worth a try!Categories
