Local shops
I saw this on the FOE Youtube page - it’s quite funny with a serious point and it rips off the Tescos ads which has to be good!

Firstly, it is quite a well done clip. It also makes an important point that may not be so obvious: that consumers can make a difference. Tesco seems to come in for some unfair criticism on this issue. After all, they never used to be the biggest retailer, they have got there by giving us ‘customers’ what we collectively want, the convenience of getting the chore part of shopping out of the way in one location, so that we can then go and sit in a coffee shop. And consumers have voted with their feet and wallets to get Tesco to where they now are. So as the clip says, vote with your feet and wallets once again (instead of protesting) and support your local shops.
The other part of the decline of local shops that doesn’t get enough attention, is the ever increasing rates of rent and other costs, that not only adds to the struggle of existing small stores, but prevents a new generation of small retailers coming through. We’d love to open a small shop, but so far are struggling to find anywhere affordable.
When landlords have the easy option of bigger rents and security from the chain stores and chain coffee shops, how can you convince them to give new small retailers a chance eg through turnover related rents.
