Car-less

Due to some unfortunate circumstances we are car-less at the moment. I’m sure once the insurance money comes through we will get another car but at the moment we have to manage without. There’s a few things this has made me think about:

  1. When we do get another car I’ll will be keeping more strictly to the speed limits. If I had been going any faster, I was under the speed limit at that time as far as I remember, the person I hit might have come off a lot worse and – thankfully everyone involved was ok but it could have been very different.
  2. It’s amazing how close to the stuff that you would normally drive too is. We’ve walked to our local supermarket a couple of times now and it only took about half an hour.
  3. It’s amazing how badly big shopping centres cater for pedestrians. I don’t think I mind the negotiating the huge car parks when I’m driving but when you are on foot it is a different kettle of fish.
  4. Cycling is a nice way to travel particuarly on a sunny day. Hopefully we will be doing more of this even when we get another car.
  5. You probably spend less money if you don’t own a car as with a car it is very easy to get in the car and go to the shops whereas without one you need to plan a bit more.
  6. It’s a bit strange not having a car now – I generally walk to work but sometimes it’s quite nice to jump in the car and go somewhere.

We will get another car at some point. I am hoping to get a diesel as most diesel cars apparently can run on biodiesel but we not made of money so we will have to see what we can get.
