Rainharvesting Systems – water conservation, recycling and reuse
Rainharvesting Systems – water conservation, recycling and reuse – Having just ordered a waterbutt kit from Blackwall who seem to have some kind of deal with every council in the country for selling water butts and composters, I came across this site for rain harvesting products. It’s one of those things that unless you are building a new house or have a bit of land I think it would be very difficult to install. Particularly in a house like ours – a turn of the century semi though. Expensive as well no doubt. Might make a good tv series though – turning and every day houe into a mean green environmentally friendly machine!
The argument for the installation of a rainwater harvesting system is certainly a problem. Whilst the actual kit is often quite affordable and demonstrates excellent performance. It is the installation costs, especially in an existing property, which prevents many people installing them. You have to modify the drainage, get a tank (in the rear garden) and make many changes to the internal plumbing of the house. During the last hose-pipe bans about three years ago, many people opted for a rainwater harvesting system to service the outside tap requirements.
We at Freerain have been very active in the field of rainwater harvesting systems. Working with other similar companies and the UKRHA we are in the process of obtaining a British Standard (BS) for rainwater harvesting.
Over the last few years we have seen a huge influx of poorly designed and even some non-compliant (WRAS) systems coming in to the county.
